Last night was the Americana Music Association awards show at the Ryman. We were once again nominated for “Group/Duo of the Year.” We were nominated in the same category 2 years ago (I say “we” but it was really the KWK trio - I just happened to join the band before they played the awards show so I got to go). We were asked to perform at the show as well (we played “Monkey Jump”). I think we played well (I was told that we got a pretty good standing O, but I didn’t see it from the stage). We hadn’t played together since mid-June until the night before at the Mercy Lounge. That show felt good too. As I mentioned to the guys, that show felt good - especially considering that we’d had such a long break - but it felt like a good show even if we’d been playing every night.

Anyway, a few of the award night’s highlights were:

  • being inches away from Robert Plant (I haven’t listened to them much lately, but I used to listen to Led Zeppelin almost nonstop)
  • discovering the snack table with Tracy
  • being forced onto the stage during the finale, which lead to getting to play percussion next to Levon Helm (he was playing drums and singing)

I, unfortunately, forgot to bring a camera. My phone’s got a camera, but (as you can see above and below) it’s not that great.

It was an all around fun night. I spent most of it wandering around awkwardly backstage with Tracy, but we had a good time. Maybe we’ll be back in another 2 years.

By the way, were gonna be in Chicago next weekend, then in San Francisco for the Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival the weekend after that. I’ll try not to forget my camera again.
